BOWEN THERAPY - AN AUSTRALIAN REMEDIAL TREATMENT

Named after Tom Bowen, who developed the technique in Geelong, Australia, in the 1950s, Bowen Therapy is a gentle, relaxing treatment to release and relax tight muscles and soothe the nervous system

I studied in Australia to the highest level currently available in the Bowen Technique, but draw on my background spanning over thirty years in other modalities. My approach to Bowen Therapy is primarily for relaxation of the body, mind and spirit. Breathing Techniques and Mindfulness are incorporated into my treatments to encourage a shift from flight, flight or freeze, into rest, digest and repair mode

Bowen therapy addresses the body holistically. Experience the gentle and non-invasive approach of Bowen therapy, tailored to your individual needs with a grounding and nourishing treatment. The Bowen Technique promotes relaxation and encourages natural healing through soothing the nervous system

Bowen Therapy is a wonderful alternative to deep tissue massage. In fact, many people prefer it as it's done through light clothing with no need for sticky massage oils and it can be done on the day of injury. The Bowen Technique is a gentle rolling movement over muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons

I have a special interest in supporting women with fatigue, mild stress and anxiety, chronic mild pain, auto immune disease and through the perimenopause and the menopause

What to expect
from your Bowen Therapy session
Your initial Bowen appt may take up to 75 minutes
Follow-up appointments are generally 45-60 minutes long
Short appointments of 15 minutes are for existing clients only, for acute issues such as re-injury

Following a full consultation, you'll be treated on a massage table, through loose, light clothing. During the treatment, there are unique pauses of a minimum of two-minutes between sequences of gentle moves, which are a key component of The Bowen Technique. These pauses allow the body time to process and respond to the gentle, precise moves. During these breaks, I step away from the treatment table. The pauses allow the body time to recognize the changes initiated by the therapy and to begin the process of repair and rebalancing. The breaks also promote relaxation and may enhance deep parasympathetic nervous system responses, which are associated with rest and repair. Unnecessary talking during your treatment is discouraged, to encourage a shift into the part of the nervous system where deep rest and repair occurs. The length of the breaks can vary depending on the individual's needs and the specific procedures being used. For example, breaks may be longer for individuals with chronic conditions like fatigue or fibromyalgia

At the end of a Bowen treatment, clients are encouraged to relax in a comfortable position on the massage table for up to fifteen minutes. This time is very much part of your experience, offering peace and time to soak up the experience, time for your body to adjust to the treatment and start bringing about balance in the tone of muscles in the front, back and sides of the body before you go about your day again
You session concludes with a complimentary water or herb tea

No other form of bodywork is recommended for up to ten days, apart from Bowen Therapy, following your session. This is because Bowen continues to release long held muscle and fascial tension for up to 10 days after your session. Having other forms of body work may interfere with the subtle but potentially profound changes that Bowen Therapy can initiate. Clients should expect to have a minimum of three Bowen treatments as a general guide, ideally 7 days apart. Chronic health conditions may need more than three sessions. On-going monthly sessions are also an option
